And this was the driving force behind shooting Deems as well. I don't think you can find that once it's lost. It took up such a big part of Sportcoat's worrying mind that I thought it came to symbolize how he and Hettie held things so they would not go missing and helped good things grow in their community. It was mentioned later by one of the Sisters I think as a "thing" about 2/3 of the way through, so then I knew it was not just an imagined problem that Sportcoat conjured up. It seemed like Sportcoat kept saying it was such a big deal and everyone was all in a snit about it, but I didn't hear all that much from others about it. Seriously, I thought at first that maybe the Christmas box was a way for him to keep engaging with Hettie. He’s published other books since then, but now he returns with another big novel: Deacon King Kong. (view spoiler) [If Sportcoat is anything like my husband, it's probably sitting on the second shelf of the fridge, but he didn't "notice" it, despite "really looking hard." James McBride’s last novel, The Good Lord Bird, won the National Book Award in 2013.
